The Process

Eco-printing is a dyeing technique that transfers the natural pigments of plants directly onto fibre.

Following in my mum's footsteps, and drawing on elements of ancient botanical printing and traditional natural dyeing, our process combines time-honoured techniques with family recipes passed down to my generation.

Each piece begins with 100% pure Habotai silk, carefully prepared with natural mordants that help bind colour to the fibre and influence its depth, tone and intensity. Minerals such as iron, aluminium and copper are used to shift the hues and create an extraordinary range of colour.

Australian leaves, flowers, bark and roots are intentionally arranged on the silk. The fabric is then rolled, bundled and steamed, allowing heat, moisture and time to draw the plants' natural pigments into the fibre and create vivid, intricate botanical imprints. Authentic and light in weight, it makes a perfect Australian souvenir.

Complementary background colours come from natural dyes derived from roots, bark, berries, flowers, madder and cochineal. Depending on the plants, minerals, season and process, these can produce rich ochres, golden browns, soft greys, muted purples and subtle blues — earthy colours that echo the Australian landscape.

The process is deliberately unpredictable. We choose the botanicals, arrange the composition and try to guide the colour, but once the silk is bundled and placed in the steamer, the final result is beyond our control. No two pieces are ever exactly alike. The outcome depends on when, where and how the materials are used — and this beautiful unpredictability is at the heart of eco-printing.

Our approach honours my mum's decades of knowledge in natural dyeing and silk printing, while bringing in my own connection to the Australian landscape and years of working with image and composition.

The result is one-of-a-kind wearable art: 100% silk carrying the colour, texture and intricate imprint of Australian botanicals.
